Chapter Twelve

“I could come with you,” I suggested thoughtfully as I lay enfolded in Ethan’s arms on the sofa.

We’d lain for hours, deep in our own thoughts as we contemplated how to win the war that was Rebecca Staunton. Ethan frowned at me questioningly, clearly on a different page of the plan in his own mind and having no clue as to what I was referring to.

“To London,” I clarified.

His face fell. “No. You can’t.”

“Why not?”

He paused for a few beats as if mindfully editing his words in to some sort of appropriateness. “Because I have to take her, Angel.”

The horror in my eyes must have been unmistakable, because he sat bolt upright and took me by the shoulders. “It’s the only way. When I drop this bombshell, I want her out of the States and at least the distance of an ocean away from you. Fuck, I want her as far away as possible from you.”

“How can you do that? If she knows what you have planned, there’s no way she’ll go with you.”

“Exactly. That’s why I won’t tell her. I won’t tell her until I’ve spoken to Ali’s parents.”

“But she’ll know we’re together now. So how’s that gonna work? She’ll know something’s up, Ethan. What are you going say, ‘Hey, me and Angel are a couple, but do you fancy a day trip to London?’ We both know she isn’t dumb enough to fall for that.”

“That’s why I’m going to have to convince her that we’re not together. And that—for a reason yet to be determined—I’ve decided to make it work with her, and I want us to move back to London.”

“What?” I hissed in disbelief. I shrugged out of his grasp and pushed to my feet, clutching at my throat as bile bubbled up from my gut like rancid poison threatening to make me gag. “You can’t be serious, Ethan. I can’t go down that road again. You pretending I don’t mean anything to you while you soothe and coddle her psychotic befuddlement. I don’t want the venomous bitch anywhere near you. Fuck knows what she’s capable of. No… just, no. We’ll have to think of something else.”

“Wait, Angel,” he replied, getting to his feet to join me in my frantic pacing. “Before you throw this out altogether, just hear me out. I have to see the Browns in person, that’s a given, so I have to go to London. We can’t risk leaving her here, even if I did take you with me. She could do untold damage—I have to think of my family and Wilde Industries as well. Besides, when she finds out what I’ve done, there’s no way we’ll get her on a plane. She’ll disappear off the radar and we’ll be looking over our shoulders forevermore.

“I can’t risk telling her before we leave for the same reasons. Even if I did manage to get her to come with me, Christ, it would be like carrying a ticking bomb on board. She’s too unpredictable. It’s way too risky.
